We got the kittens and their mama settled into the kitchen, and I showered and dressed for the wake. Sam and Tawny were hanging around to help. Sam was in charge of the guests, making sure they had food and drinks and were comfortable. Tawny was in charge of the ghosts, keeping them away from the guests and sounding the alarm if Mason showed up.

Faith had ignored all of my texts, asking if she told Erika about our situation. I’m sure she had the phone off at the funeral, and I understood that. It would have been nice to know what we were getting into, though. I took her lack of reply to be a no. She hadn’t told Erika.

Lex was standing guard over the kittens in the kitchen and seemed to have calmed down from his earlier hissy fit.

We hadn’t seen Joe or Mason all morning. Bert drifted around, adding a few comments and suggestions for arranging the bar. He and Tawny stood with their heads close together as they surveyed the room.

At 1:45, a pair of limousines pulled into the driveway and I watched as people poured out of them. I recognized Faith and Erika as they got out of the first car with an older couple, I assumed, were the Arches. Another younger couple, possibly Wilson, their son, and his wife, Wanda, also exited the first car. Another car that held a group of young people who looked to be about Mason and Wilson’s age followed.

I held the door and welcomed them in. As Faith passed by, I gave her a pointed look. She shook her head.

“It’s okay. I’m sticking close to her,” she whispered.

Not sure what good that would do. Mason had already proven he could bully Faith, even as a ghost. What was she going to do to help Erika if he decided to make his move?

I shook my head at Sam and Tawny, letting them know Erika still didn’t know what was going on. Their eyes followed the young women as they made their way to the dining room. Sam followed them.

Mrs. Arch sought me out and introduced herself. She stood nearby as the rest of the party came in, providing introductions and giving a little back story of each person and how they knew Mason.

The last person to arrive walked past us both without a glance or a pause. After a quick look around, she made a beeline for the liquor cart. She announced she was taking special requests and then began to expertly mix cocktails with a great deal of flourish and theatrics.

“Well, she’s certainly having a wonderful time,” Mrs. Arch sneered.

“Who is she?”

“Lisa,” she crinkled her nose as she said the name. “A bartender.”

“Friend of Mason and Wilson’s too?” I asked.

“I suppose. She’s always been rather pushy with me. Thinks she should take over now that Mason is gone.”

“It would be Wilson though, right?” This struck me as possibly an inappropriate question to ask, but Wilson was her actual son and it only made sense.
